Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA – November 13, 2013

With the help of DIDASKO and Cornerstone Education Co-Ops, EC-Council Foundation’s Live.Learn.Secure. program will be made available to home school students for the first time.

EC-Council Foundation is a non-profit initiative created by the founding members of EC-Council. The foundation’s goal is to help remediate cyber security safety issues for youth and adults alike through training and education. To accomplish this goal, EC-Council Foundation created the Live.Learn.Secure. program that donates cyber security course-ware to training and education facilities. To date, EC-Council Foundation has partnered with over 40 schools in the United States, as well as schools and training centers in the Philippines and Peru. By partnering with numerous education and training facilities, EC-Council Foundation hopes to get as many students as possible trained in cyber security.

The DIDASKO and Cornerstone Co-Ops will help EC-Council Foundation accomplish its goal by teaching the Certified Secure Computer User (CSCU) certification to middle and high school aged, home school students in the Ohio area. This is a first for the Foundation, as all of the Live.Learn.Secure. partners that currently teach the CSCU certification program are schools or training centers. Working with the DIDASKO and Cornerstone Co-Ops, EC-Council Foundation will create two case studies that will track the students starting knowledge on information security, train the students then assess the student’s knowledge of cyber security after completing the CSCU program. The Certified Secure Computer User (CSCU) program will train the students on basic information security topics such as: definitions of phishing attacks, virus, email hoaxes and how to stay safe while online.

In creating a case study of the two home school co-ops, EC-Council Foundation will lead the way for other home school programs to adopt the Certified Secure Computer User course-ware and training. EC-Council Foundation will use the case studies as examples on how other home school programs should teach the certification.

Jay Bavisi a Security Evangelist and the Co-Founder of EC-Council Foundation stated, “As technology continues to advance, it is important to equip our children with the knowledge they need to stay safe online, while teaching them a skill set that can be used towards job placement in the future.”

Clearwater, Florida, USA – August 26, 3013

(ISC)²® (“ISC-squared”), the world’s largest information security professional body and administrators of the CISSP®, today announced the official charter approval of its 100th Chapter. The milestone was reached when the San Diego Chapter petition was signed this month. Launched in 2011, the (ISC)² Chapter Program aims to strengthen the global information security professional community through collaboration, education, networking and mentoring. With an emphasis on information security education for professionals and vulnerable publics, the (ISC)2 Chapter program is helping to overcome the information security skills gap and workforce shortage occurring around the world.

Since the Chapter program began, nearly 9,000 aspiring and established cyber security professionals around the globe have broadened their knowledge and their professional and personal networks through (ISC)² Chapters. Chapter achievements from the past year include:

  • The Colombo Sri Lanka Chapter sent representatives to join the Sri Lankan team that participated in the global CyberLympics finals. The Global CyberLympics is a not-for-profit initiative of the EC-Council Foundation supported by the Geneva-based International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Its goal is to raise awareness toward increased education and ethics in information security through a series of cyber competitions that encompass forensics, ethical hacking and defense.
  • The Korea Chapter has engaged local universities in an effort to promote information security career and studies. They recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Dongguk University, whereby Chapter members will recommend five CISSPs per semester to pursue information security and technology graduate schools and receive a 20 percent discount off their tuition. Korea Chapter executives are also giving lectures to the students at Dongguk University and Korea Cyber University. They also collaborated with Seoul School of Integrated Science and Technology and Kangwon University to conduct joint research on information security.
  • The Ethiopia Chapter has embarked on an active public awareness campaign about social issues related to information security. This includes featuring talks on local radio stations about cyber threats and ways to protect the community at large, and participation in the Cyber Security Panel at the recent Innovation Africa Digital Summit 2013.
  • The London Chapter started a Women in Security (WiS) special interest group in 2012, and in 2013, the development of a mentoring program to help women discover the opportunities that the profession offers and encourage more to join the field. The group has raised awareness of the gender imbalance of women working in information security in the United Kingdom and the particular strengths women bring to the profession. They are focused on helping women develop skills, confidence and their careers and encouraging women to get involved in broader industry initiatives.
  • The Manitoba/Saskatchewan Chapter collaborated with CIPS Manitoba, Skull Space, and ISACA to implement a cyber security educational program called the Canadian Cyber Defense Challenge (CDC). The CDC is part of a pilot study that will develop students’ awareness and understanding of cyber security fundamentals.
  • The New Jersey Chapter has established a “Junior Chapter” membership category, which allows local high school students interested in volunteering for information security community outreach efforts to join the Chapter. The Junior Chapter is currently focused on educating senior citizens on how to safeguard their information and prevent identity theft. The first Junior Chapter member is a 15-year-old high school student who was inspired to help prevent senior citizens from becoming victims of identity theft after an incident occurred with an elderly member of her family. The student developed a step-by-step guide called ‘Not in My Name’ to educate senior citizens on how to prevent identity theft.
  • The Sacramento Chapter has made great strides in attracting young people to the information security field. Through its members’ participation in the Young Professionals Program, emerging professionals are given a platform to connect with mentors, peers, and job opportunities, and to find their place in the security community. The Chapter also furthered its engagement in the community by helping to expand the (ISC)² Foundation’s Safe and Secure Online Program, teaching 600 children and 25 parents learn how to protect themselves online and become responsible digital citizens.

“The explosive growth of our Chapters is a testament to the passion (ISC)² members have for strengthening and giving back to both their local civic and professional communities,” said W. Hord Tipton, CISSP-ISSEP, CAP, CISA, executive director, (ISC)². “They are the backbone of (ISC)² and a focal point for the global information security community.”

EC-Council Urges for Cyber Vaccination Program https://foundation.eccouncil.org/ec-council-urges-for-cyber-vaccination-program/ Tue, 18 Jun 2013 05:29:36 +0000 https://foundation.eccouncil.org/?p=786

Mobile Bay, Alabama, USA – June 18, 2013

President of EC-Council Jay Bavisi warned thought leaders from across the world, namely, from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the National Security Agency (NSA), and the finest academic minds of the NSA’s centers of academic excellence of the worsening Cyber Plague at the Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education (CISSE Colloquium). The event was hosted by the University of South Alabama in Mobile Bay on June 10, 2013.

The Colloquium, one of the largest gatherings of academics, government, and industry, had a keynote address, entitled “The Cyber Security Quagmire: Finding the Panacea”, aimed to elucidate the information security industry’s successes, failures, and future out-of-the-box solutions that can be implemented, using the pharmaceutical industry’s fight against diseases as a model.

Throwing more light on this Jay Bavisi said, “We have unknowingly followed on the same path as the pharma industry. We quarantined our networks from attacks via firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and intrusion prevention systems. When this was insufficient, we introduced cyber hygiene by introducing security awareness programs, which introduced policies, processes, and controls; the next step should be a cyber-vaccine in order to propel the world’s organizations into a more secure future.

He adds, “Findings from the Code Uncode competition conducted in India with 5000 participants decisively prove there is a serious lack of knowledge in secure coding practices that could be a causative source of security breaches around the world.”

The Colloquium is active throughout the year and holds an annual conference in June.

EC-Council Warns of Cyber Plague at United States National Security Agency Colloquium https://foundation.eccouncil.org/ec-council-warns-of-cyber-plague-at-united-states-national-security-agency-colloquium/ Wed, 12 Jun 2013 05:23:49 +0000 https://foundation.eccouncil.org/?p=782

Mobile, Alabama, USA – June 12, 2013

Jay Bavisi, president of EC-Council, warns academic minds to introduce cyber vaccination programs via secure code education in his opening keynote address of the US National Security Agency’s CISSE Colloquium 2013. Bavisi pointed out that while the medical industry has been able to nearly eradicate diseases such as polio and small pox through medical vaccinations, the information security industry hasn’t yet been able to achieve similar success against the scourges of cyberspace because of the lack of implementation of its vaccine equivalent: secure coding.

Jay Bavisi, warned thought-leaders from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the National Security Agency (NSA), and the finest academic minds of the NSA’s centers of academic excellence of the worsening Cyber Plague at the Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education (CISSE Colloquium). The event was hosted by the University of South Alabama in Mobile Bay on June 10, 2013. The CISSE Colloquium was created in 1997 to provide a forum for dialogue among leading figures in government, industry, and academia.

The Colloquium, one of the largest gatherings of academics, government, and industry, is led by Dr. William Maconachy, a former Director of the NSA and the current Director of Academic Affairs of Capitol College. Bavisi’s keynote address, entitled “The Cyber Security Quagmire: Finding the Panacea”, aimed to elucidate the information security industry’s successes, failures, and future out-of-the-box solutions that can be implemented, using the pharmaceutical industry’s fight against diseases as a model. As the co-founder and President of one of the largest IT Security certification bodies in the world, EC-Council, and the co-creator of the groundbreaking Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certification that launched ethical hacking as a mainstream career, Bavisi lent an interesting perspective to the event.

Bavisi said, “We have unknowingly followed on the same path as the pharma industry. We quarantined our networks from attacks via firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and intrusion prevention systems. When this was insufficient, we introduced cyber hygiene by introducing security awareness programs, which introduced policies, processes, and controls.” Bavisi went on to say that the next step should be a cyber-vaccine in order to propel the world’s organizations into a more secure future. Bavisi continued by linking the results of a recent secure coding competition conducted in India with nearly five thousand participants, Code Uncode, to the continuing plague of insecurity. Findings from the Code Uncode competition decisively prove there is a serious lack of knowledge in secure coding practices that could be a causative source of security breaches around the world.

The Colloquium is active throughout the year and holds an annual conference in June. Conference information is available on the Colloquium website at https://www.cisse.info. The Colloquium board consists of members such as Brenda Oldfield, formerly the Director of the National Cyber Security Division of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security; William Maconachy, PhD and former deputy senior computer science authority at the National Security Agency (NSA); as well as Daniel P Shoemaker, PhD, and Principal Investigator and Senior Research Scientist at UDM’s Center for Cyber Security and Intelligence Studies.

Geneva, Switzerland – May 16, 2012

Jay Bavisi, the President of EC-Council Foundation, a 501c3 not-for-profit organization, announced a new online competition open to every country in the world with the goal of raising awareness of information security and online safety among teenagers and adults. The announcement of the competition, dubbed the “High School Challenge”, came today while Mr. Bavisi spoke on a high-level executive panel at the World Summit of Information Security 2012, organized by the International Telecommunication Union in cooperation with UNESCO, UNCTAD, and UNDP in Geneva.

Speaking alongside Mr. Bavisi, the high-level panel consisted of the Secretary General of ITU, Dr. Hamadoun Toure; Mohd Noor Amin, Chairman of the Management Board of IMPACT; H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, Director of General Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of U.A.E.; Honorable M. Gilbert Noel Ouedraogo, Minister of Transport of Burkina Faso; H.E. Valery Borissov, Deputy Minister of Transport and Information Technologies; and Dr. Salim Alruzaiqi, Information Technology Authority, Communications CEO of Oman.

The new online competition format was created with the intent of incorporating teens and young adults into EC-Council Foundation’s existing and groundbreaking ethical hacking competition, The Global CyberLympics.

CyberLympics has been endorsed by the International Multilateral Partnership Against Cyber Threats (IMPACT), which is the cyber security executing arm of the United Nations’ specialized agency, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Dr. Hamadoun I. Toure, the Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), has officially been appointed as the Patron of the Global CyberLympics. With that appointment, Dr. Toure became the Chair of the Global CyberLympics Advisory Council (GCAC).

The Global CyberLympics is a not-for-profit initiative lead and organized by EC-Council Foundation with the goal of increasing education and ethics in information security through a series of cyber competitions that encompass forensics, ethical hacking, and defense.
